Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche, inspired by the example of the renowned Nalanda University of ancient India, is directing a project to establish a state-of-the-art Contemplative Resource and Retreat Center in Central Texas. A gathering place for the great wisdom traditions of its time, Nalanda University attracted students and scholars from near and far. Courses were drawn from every field of learning, sacred and secular: the sciences and arts, metaphysics, philosophy, and the scriptural traditions of various Buddhist and non-Buddhist lineages. In a spirit of ecumenical harmony, seekers drawn to Nalanda’s famed gates engaged in the most important of explorations: What is genuine happiness? What is truth? What is the nature of reality and what implications does this have for living a meaningful life?

In the same spirit of open inquiry and inclusiveness, the future Contemplative Resource and Retreat Center, based on the selfless, ethical, and compassionate teachings of the historical Buddha Shakyamuni, will welcome and honor people and groups of all faiths and wisdom traditions. The Center will offer programs and trainings in five fields of study and research: Creativity and the Arts, Communications, Health and Wellbeing, Philosophy (Knowing and Reasoning), and the Science of Mind.

In the tradition of all great faiths, a core principle of the center will be a commitment to community outreach and the development of programs, internships, and mentoring opportunities, on- and off-site, for youth, families and other interested communities.
